mw031 - mw040 - What's that sound?
Catalogue releases MW031-MW040 marked another significant shift in the visual evolution of the Mo' Wax catalogue. By this stage, the obi-strip format had been abandoned entirely in favour of full-colour sleeve artwork. This period saw the growing influence of Futura 2000, whose distinctive blend of abstract graffiti, futuristic imagery and minimalist composition helped redefine the label's visual identity. Alongside photographic and mixed-media works, his artwork moved Mo' Wax away from a tightly controlled house style towards a more artist-led approach, where individual releases increasingly functioned as standalone pieces of visual art.
The role of branding also evolved during this period. The Mo' Wax logo became less prominent, often reduced in size or subtly incorporated into the artwork itself, allowing sleeve designs to take centre stage. This approach would become a defining characteristic of the label throughout the latter half of the 1990s and helped establish Mo' Wax as one of the most visually distinctive independent labels of the era.
Musically and commercially, the label continued to grow in confidence, embracing a wider range of styles and formats. A diverse selection of physical releases appeared during this period, including the label's first 7-inch single (MW032), alongside 12-inch singles, CD releases, 10-inch formats and double 10-inch sets. The increasing variety of formats reflected both the expanding scope of the label's roster and its continued willingness to experiment with presentation and packaging.
The catalogue structure also became increasingly sophisticated. Several releases generated dedicated remix editions and format variants, resulting in additional catalogue numbers such as MW033P and MW033R. For the first time, promotional and DJ-only releases were assigned their own catalogue-number prefixes rather than being distributed solely as anonymous white-label pressings. The first example was MW032P, marking the beginning of a more structured approach to promotional releases and creating a clearer distinction between commercial and promotional issues within the catalogue.
This period also saw the emergence of more traditional DJ-oriented releases. MW040DJ introduced a plain-cover promotional format intended specifically for club and radio use, reflecting the label's growing importance within DJ culture and specialist music retail networks.
Collectively, MW031-MW040 represents a transitional era in which Mo' Wax moved beyond the visual conventions established during its early years. Through the influence of artists such as Futura 2000, the expansion of release formats and the introduction of increasingly complex catalogue variations, the label developed the creative and visual framework that would define many of its most celebrated releases in the years that followed.
