Mo’ Wax Arts (MWA) emerged in early 1996 as an unofficial creative division of Mo’ Wax, reflecting the label’s growing interest in visual culture alongside music. The initials were first used as a catalogue prefix for the Visual Sampler series, a collection of releases centred on design, illustration and artwork rather than audio recordings. These projects highlighted the importance of graphic design within the Mo’ Wax identity and provided a platform for artists and designers associated with the label’s distinctive visual aesthetic.
Later in 1996, M.W.A. Ltd was established as a separate publishing company, independent of Mo’ Wax. During this period, the initials evolved to stand for Mo’ Wax Associated, reflecting a broader creative remit that extended beyond the label’s core musical activities. The MWA imprint became home to a diverse range of visual and publishing projects, further blurring the boundaries between music, design, art and popular culture.
In May 1999, MWA was formally incorporated into Mo’ Wax Labels Ltd, cementing its role within the wider organisation. The releases documented in this section illustrate the label’s longstanding commitment to visual creativity and demonstrate how artwork, packaging and design became integral components of the Mo’ Wax story, rather than simply supporting elements for its musical output.
